02 — Performance Solutions
A Performance Solution is the National Construction Code's own mechanism for approving a design that departs from its prescriptive recipes: demonstrate, using the assessment methods the Code recognises, that the design meets the relevant Performance Requirements. Done well, it is not a workaround — it is compliance, documented at higher resolution.
QFS prepares Performance Solutions across the disciplines we practise. Each follows the ABCB's development process — identify the Performance Requirements, agree the assessment method, analyse, and report — so the pathway is defensible from the first page.

Assessment methods we use
- Comparison with the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions — quantifying equivalence or improvement
- Verification Methods prescribed by the NCC, where one exists for the requirement
- Engineering calculation and modelling appropriate to the question being answered
- Evidence of suitability — test reports, CodeMark and technical assessments, marshalled correctly
- Expert judgement, applied sparingly and always alongside evidence
When you need one
- The design departs from a DTS provision, however slightly — a departure is binary and needs a documented pathway
- A certifier has flagged a non-compliance you don't want to design out
- A council or consent condition requires justification of a design feature
- You want a cost or buildability outcome the prescriptive path can't deliver

- A Performance Solution report identifying the DTS departures, the Performance Requirements engaged, the assessment method, the analysis and the conclusion
- A format certifiers recognise and can assess without correspondence ping-pong
- Revisions to close out assessment queries, included in the fee
